If the thought of sitting in the dental chair for treatment causes you to feel fear, we can help to calm your nerves through the calming effects of sedation dentistry, which promotes deep relaxation during a visit to the dentist. At our office, we can provide both nitrous oxide and oral sedation to reduce your dental anxiety and help you have a successful dental visit.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is also referred to as laughing gas because of its euphoric effects. It is provided by placing a mask over your nose so that you can inhale it while you are in dental chair. While we care for your smile, you can breath a constant flow of calming gas that will help you to relax. During this time, you will remain awake throughout the visit. Once the mask is removed, the effects of nitrous oxide will begin to fade and you can safely drive home after your appointment.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is usually ingested as a pill that you swallow before the time of your appointment so that you can have a calming emotion by the time you are settled in the dental chair. The effects of oral sedation can be compared to those of the medication Valium. Oral sedation is like nitrous oxide in that you won’t fall asleep from it, since it is only designed to reduce your anxiety.
