Man receiving dentures at Avery Dental Center Avery Dental Center has years of experience supplying complete or partial dentures. We can help you get the perfect fit, whether you are an existing wearer or if this is your first-time wearing dentures.

If you are missing teeth, dentures can help restore your function and appearance. Full or complete dentures replace all of the lost teeth in one jaw while a partial replacement is used if only some of them have been lost. Dentures are worn to replace any type of tooth that has become loose enough for a person's natural chewing ability to be affected by it - whether this happens gradually over time because of periodontal disease or following an injury.

What Are the Types of Dentures?

Partial dentures may consist of a plastic base or a metal frame that holds the replacement missing teeth. They often consisted of a plastic base or metal frame that holds the replacement missing teeth. They stay in place with metal clasps that clip over the tooth on either side of the gap.

Complete or full dentures are held in place by forming a seal with the gums. They can also be affixed to dental implants that are placed surgically in the jawbone.

Plastic dentures tend to be temporary and are known as healing dentures. They are lighter than their metallic counterparts and allow for your gums and jawbone to heal after any extractions you may have had.

What is the Process for Obtaining a Denture?

Following extractions or tooth loss, it is vital for the gums and bone to heal before a denture can be fitted. It typically takes several months of healing time during which your gums shrink back as part of the healing process. During this time, a temporary, healing denture may be worn.

Once enough time has elapsed since losing one of your teeth - typically several months - we take impressions of your mouth in order to build a custom-made denture that will be your permanent denture and fit better than the temporary ones.

Do I Wear the Denture at Night?

Dentures are typically not worn at night to give the soft tissues in your mouth a chance to recover. This is because it can irritate them if you do not take the denture out and let the gums rest.

The exception, however, is when you are first wearing healing dentures after receiving an extraction or getting fitted with new ones. You should wear these at night at first, but after two to five days have passed you need to take out the teeth when you are sleeping so as not to restrict blood vessels that provide nourishment for tissues during the healing process.

Dentures should be cleaned after every meal and put in a container of water or soaked in denture cleaning products at night. It is crucial you do not let your dentures dry out as this can cause them to lose their shape. If your dentures warp, they will not fit properly and can be uncomfortable to wear and cause irritation or pain to your gums and other teeth.
