What Is Periodontal Care? The supporting gums, soft tissue, and bones that support teeth are known as the periodontium. The specialist area of dentistry that deals with this area is known as periodontics. Its primary function is to preserve the health of the gums with preventive care and treating gum disease in its early stages, as well as when it has progressed to the more severe form, known as periodontitis. Every day, your teeth are in contact with bacteria that can cause gum disease. Gum health is the key to a healthy body because it helps prevent tooth decay and other oral diseases. The soft tissue and bone that supports teeth are known as the periodontium. Periodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that deals with this delicate region because it is important to prevent gum disease in its early stages so that it does not progress. Left untreated, more severe forms like chronic plaque-induced inflammation can occur, leading to periodontitis when the bone and other supporting structures of the teeth are affected. What Are the Signs of Gum Disease?Gum disease is a condition that many people do not know they have. Gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, can be invisible and painless but has some warning signs to watch out for, such as bleeding gums or red, swollen gums that are beginning to recede from around your teeth. This might sound like an easy thing to overlook but if these symptoms of gum disease are ignored, they may lead to more serious problems, such as bone loss in the jaw and lose teeth that may eventually fall out. This stage of the disease is advanced periodontitis. By this time, you may also notice a persistent bad taste in your mouth or bad breath (halitosis). You may start to get gum abscesses as the gums recede, exposing the tooth roots. How Do I Prevent Gum Disease?Gum disease is easily prevented, but it does require that you have a proper cleaning routine at home. You should brush your teeth at least twice daily and follow this up with flossing, taking care to floss beneath the gum line in between the teeth to ensure that all debris is removed. What Happens if I Have Gum Disease? We offer a range of treatments that can cure gum disease if it is caught in the early stages. Alongside the hygiene routine you perform at home, the disease can be eliminated. However, if it has progressed, regular periodontal maintenance treatments can stop it from becoming worse. The main treatment for early gum disease and periodontal maintenance is scaling and root planing, which removes plaque and calculus from the surfaces of the teeth and roots above and below the gum line. The aim is to create a smooth surface to encourage recessed gums to reattach to the teeth, as well as removing bacteria from periodontal pockets, which form as the gums recess. Scaling and root planing are very effective in maintaining gum health, but there is a range of other surgical and non-surgical treatments that may be required, depending on your specific circumstances.
